Homes Project 2019 - 2020
In 2019 the national Embroiderers Guild set up a project entitled HOMES. The Winchester branch decided to take up this project and involve the community as well. To get started, one member ice dyed several metres of calico in softly muted tones of green and blue. These were cut into strips, 16cm x 56cm, onto which the homes have been stitched. Another member designed and created the plywood structure onto which all the strips have been attached.
A great many members took part in stitching a home, some involved members of their families. On June 22nd, the National Day of Stitch, tables were set up in the haberdashery section of Closs and Hamblin in Winchester where members of the public were invited and encouraged to sit and add some stitching to a panel.
The Homes project was first on display at the group's exhibition of work in 2020. Each time it is reassembled the panels are in different positions.
Since then in 2022, it has been on public display at an art exhibition at the Gray Lady Foundation in Bursledon an at the WTEG Open Studios in Chandlers Ford.
In February 2023 it was displayed at the Newbury Stitch Fair, alongside which WTEG ran a free drop in workshop for people to stitch a 'house' card with donations going to MENCAP.
A booklet with photographs of each of the 38 panels has been produced. These will be on sale at WTEG's Open Studios at Fryern Community Centre, 26 & 27 August 2023.
